I’ve got a message to share. IT revolves around hope and sustenance, joy and sustainability. with luck it will rise above the cacophony of politics and Covid-19 updates because the message is important but simple. I BELIEVE THAT THE GARDEN WILL SAVE US. No one knows what the future will hold and we can not go into this uncharted territory unprepared. We should all begin to start producing more of what we need at the local level. We should start sharing our bounty with our neighbors in a deliberate act of interdependence. We should slow down, take a step backwards, and revisit the ways of our fore-bearers. we, like the garden itself, should get back to our roots.
This may mean ramping up your own backyard vegetable garden with more of a production goal in mind. It may mean producing food for your own family, but also for the less fortunate neighbors in the community. It may mean planning for abundance and winter storage, adding more perennial food crops to your collection, and thinking in terms of community-wide crop sharing programs. It will be a new garden for a new time and it will be beautiful.
I would like to offer help with this important movement, to share the information that I have, to help with the larger scale coordination. The garden has become my own life’s work and has already given me as much as I have put into it. The older I get, the more grateful I am for this knowledge. I want to give back and contribute to our group survival in whatever way I can. That best way for me is going to be through the garden.
Please join me for my regular contributions to this blog. I will be diagramming my own family’s garden plans in detail so that others might follow along. I assume that many of the readers may have lots to contribute, so please use the Facebook forum to share your ideas. Keep it positive and let’s delve into this work together.
