Rudbeckia fulgida
Rudbeckia fulgida
This brilliantly blooming, late-summer perennial is considered one of the easiest and most rewarding of the native flowers. It comes in many cultivars, the most popular historically was ‘Goldstrum’. This particular cultivar has a greater susceptibility to downy mildew (Plasmopara halstedii), a debilitating and permanent pathogen. Currently there are nurseries in the industry who are trying to encourage planting the more resistant straight species or Rubbeckia fulgida var. fulgida instead. A vigorous spreader, this plant is likely to spread to fill areas easily and can be considered agressive.
